Welcome Residency Applicants!

Although we cannot invite you here in person, we hope this website helps you learn about the people, places, and education at UCLA.

Welcome!

The UCLA Stein Eye Institute Residency Training Program provides a state of the art education in the setting of cutting-edge clinical care, research and community partnership. The program is designed to provide graduated experience leading to independent responsibility in the medical and surgical management of ocular disease.

The training sites complement each other to provide a well-rounded exposure to everything the field of ophthalmology has to offer. At the Stein Eye Institute, residents work directly with world-renowned faculty in subspecialty clinics and operating rooms specializing in tertiary and quaternary care. Our county hospitals (Harbor-UCLA and Olive View-UCLA) offer a combination of academic and community ophthalmology, with residents assuming higher levels of responsibility in patient care. At these hospitals, residents care for a diverse and underserved patient population as part of the Los Angeles County “safety net”. The Veterans Affairs hospital presents another opportunity for residents to take on a higher level of responsibility while caring for a diverse range of ophthalmic pathology.

We take pride in the level of faculty involvement at all of our sites – the majority of the Stein Eye faculty supervise resident training at one or more of our satellite sites.

“As a former resident the lifelong friendships and bonds with my co-residents is something I cherish the most about our program. As an attending, I love the opportunity to play a role in the tremendous growth of our residents from the beginning of residency to their graduation as highly competent and capable surgeons.”

“After 20 years, I’ve had a lot of practice selecting residents. When they get here on the first day, they don’t even know how to turn on the slit lamp. Then, through a series of carefully designed exercises, magic happens. They rise to an extremely high level.”

We look forward to meeting you!
